The role of caring can have a big impact on a carer’s life and affect them in a number of different ways. These impacts cannot be underestimated. They can affect both the person in the caring role and their families and can have a significant effect on financial, emotional and physical wellbeing.
Reasons for being a carer can be connected to being part of a family. This might include ‘emotional obligations’ and that a carer feels they ‘have no other choice’. The impacts of caring occur gradually so you may not even be aware that the various aspects of your life are changing. The problem with this is that it becomes ‘the norm’ for you. So, it will be harder for you to identify the specific impacts on areas of your life. This is normal, whenever we become used to the situation we are unable to see the real effect that this has on our lives. Therefore it is very important for us to take a step back and look at all the areas one at a time to see what changes we can make to live healthier lives.
